Protecting yourself against credit card fraud
Credit cards are usually very safe to use, and fortunately relatively few customers have to deal with credit card fraud.
Credit card companies and banks are vigilant in preventing fraud but you can do your bit to protect yourself against fraudsters and scams.
- Never keep your PIN number in your wallet with your cards, or tell anyone else what it is - including credit card company employees.
- Never give out your CVC number (the 3-digit number on the back of your credit card) verbally. This is only used for internet transactions.
- Do not email your credit card number as emails can easily be read by third parties.
- Avoid buying online with your credit card on public computers like internet cafes or work computers. It is safer to use a home based computer for any banking transaction, but ensure you keep your virus software up to date.
- Check your credit card statements and reconcile the transactions against receipts. It is also a good idea to check your credit card statement online during the month to pick up any strange transactions.
- When paying in a restaurant, pub or club, keep your eye on your card at all times. Banks and credit card companies will not call or email for any of your banking details, including credit card numbers.
