What to do when your windscreen cracks
If you find a small chip or crack in your windscreen, get it fixed straight away.
Your car insurance may cover windscreen repairs. A chip or crack less than 10cm long can usually be repaired by an expert. Anything longer than 10cm usually means the windscreen should be replaced. Not only is driving with a cracked windscreen dangerous, your car will not pass an MOT.
Short-term windscreen repairs
Until you can get the chip or crack fixed, cover it with tape to keep the dirt out. A crack or chip does not always mean you will have to replace the whole windscreen. Resin injection repairs carried out by a professional will fix small cracks and chips very effectively. DIY windscreen repairs are not recommended as any residual water left in the chip or crack will eventually widen and could cause the windscreen to break.
How to extend the life of your windscreen
Winter is especially hard on your windscreen due to expansion and contraction with weather conditions. For de-icing the car windows always use a proper ice scraper and a general de-icer to help the ice come away smoothly from your windscreen. Repair any chips or cracks as soon as possible as water expands in cold weather and can cause major cracks in your windscreen.
