Avoiding breakdowns
Every so often cars breakdown but there is a whole lot you can do to avoid problems on the road. A bit of maintenance and loving care and attention will help reduce the risk of your car breaking down.
- Have your car serviced regularly.
- Don't run out of petrol. Get into the habit of filling up before you need to.
- Keep your tyres at the right pressure.
- When you notice anything strange with your car, get it checked out as soon as possible by a professional mechanic.
Dealing with Breakdowns
You can be prepared for dealing with breakdowns.
- Always have your mobile phone with you, make sure that it's charged and has sufficient call credit.
- Keep a coat, sensible shoes, blanket, torch and some money in the car.
- Consider getting breakdown cover. For an extra charge on your car insurance this can save you money in the long run and means you can be back on the road with a minimum of fuss.
If your car does breakdown:
- If possible drive on to a well lit, busy area.
- If you breakdown on the motorway get onto the hard shoulder and stay in your car. If you have to get out of the car, do so via the left hand passenger door.
- While you are waiting for your mechanic or towing service keep your doors locked.
- Ask for proof of identity from whoever comes to your aid. Official breakdown teams will have identification.
