Car maintenance

Though car maintenance is probably not at the top of your list of things to do, it is not rocket science and a little bit of knowledge can save you time, money and unnecessary breakdowns.

Check engine fluids

There are only six main types of fluid to keep topped up in your engine and your car manual will list the location of the containers.

  1. Windscreen washer fluid. Keep this topped up with water and cleaning agent which stops the water freezing in the winter. Do not put dish washing liquid in the container as it can leave a film on the windscreen. Having an empty washer container can cost you points off your licence.
  2. Brake fluid. Check this every six months and get it topped up immediately if levels are low.
  3. Engine oil. Oil should be changed every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check levels regularly and before long car trips. When you refill your oil make sure you use a trusted brand that is recommended by the manufacturer of your car.
  4. Radiator, Engine Coolant and Antifreeze. Keep an eye on the gauges for engine temperature and check levels regularly. Before winter arrives add a trusted brand of antifreeze to your radiator.
  5. Transmission fluid. Most vehicle manufacturers suggest changing this fluid every 15,000-30,000 miles.
  6. Power steering fluid. Low fluid can mean the loss of power steering. Make sure that this is topped up. If it is running low you'll hear a straining sound.

Check Your Tyres

Make sure that your tyres have sufficient tread and are inflated to the right pressure and check their balance and alignment regularly. Your tyres must have 3mm of tread to be compliant.

Use Your Senses

Keep your eyes open for leaks, smoke or steam coming from the engine. If you have a problem with the car make a note of exactly what you saw, smelt or heard so you can tell the mechanic. This can speed up the diagnosis and make the repairs much faster.
