Driving safely
Unfortunately women can be more vulnerable when driving alone but there are some simple precautions to keep in mind when you are in the car by yourself.
- When you are driving keep the doors locked and make sure your valuables are out of sight.
- Put your shopping into the boot and not the backseat.
- If you believe you are being followed, trust your instincts and pull into the nearest crowded place or a police station. Don't be afraid to use your horn to attract attention.
- Don't give lifts to strangers.
- Make sure your phone is charged and has credit and keep it in easy reach.
- When you are stopped at traffic lights make sure there is enough space between the car in front of you and your bumper so that you can pull out if you need to.
- Choose a well-lit spot to park in particularly in the winter when it gets dark early on.
- Reverse into a parking space so that leaving is easier and when you return to your car, make sure you have your keys in your hand to avoid having to search for them when you are standing next to your car.
- Plan ahead and tell people when to expect you to be home.
