Satellite navigation - Is it worth it?

Satellite navigation has been somewhat of a revolution over the past couple of years and in spite of a couple of well reported glitches overall Sat Nav helps us navigate on a daily basis, easing the stress of travelling quite significantly. Here's some advice on satellite navigation systems:

Before you buy a sat nav system, make sure that you know how much space is available in your car for the unit. Smaller devices are great for this as you can simply take them out and put them in your pocket. They can double as your map when you are walking around, and it won't be stolen from the car.

Look for the following features if buying a new Sat Nav:

  • Pre-installed database of speed camera locations in the UK.
  • Wide range of route options.
  • Points of interest information pre-installed.
  • Traffic and route planner information, weather and speed limits ahead.
  • A 3.5" screen for ease of use.
  • Convenient postcode navigation.
  • Clear spoken instructions in the language of your choice.

Remember that mapping software is always being updated, as are the roads you are travelling on and even the best products might have some shortcomings so don't suspend commonsense and rely solely on your Sat Nav.

Whether you are a first time or an experienced Sat Nav user, make sure you take the time to familiarise yourself with your device.

Finally, make sure that you get the features that you are going to use, there is no need for spending more on a Sat Nav that you will never use.

Happy travelling!
