Facts about women drivers
There are plenty of stereotypes about women drivers being worse than men but official figures show that in fact the opposite is true, at least for young and middle aged women.
Statistics produced by the Home Office in 2006 show that 94% of those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving were male.
The difference between the sexes comes down to quite a simple distinction, says a study by the Social Issues Research Centre. While women can make low-risk mistakes such as stalling at junctions, men are more likely to engage in thrill-seeking behaviour and be convicted of speeding and drink driving. But this doesn't hold for all ages. Young men up to 25 years of age are more likely to kill or injure themselves than women of the same age, but as drivers of both sexes gain experience the gap in driving behaviour closes and by the time we reach the age of 40 there is only a negligible difference. The trend reverses once women reach their 60s and consequently insurance premiums for women over 60 tend to be higher.
In general the way women drive means that they can pay less for their car insurance. It is not just to do with driving style but also the fact that on average, women drive shorter distances and their claims cost less than men's.
There are increasing numbers of car insurance products tailored to women drivers, so shop around to make sure you get the cover you need at the right price.
