Dental insurance
Avoid painful dental bills
Tesco Dental Insurance means you can manage the cost of taking care of your teeth. As well as covering routine care and unplanned treatment such as fillings, both levels offer comprehensive cover at home and abroad for dental accidents and dental emergencies, as well as treatment of mouth cancer.
How much could dental treatment cost?
New customers buying Tesco Dental Insurance before 19 August 2009 get a free £20 Gift Card (conditions apply).
Details of the differences between the two cover levels are shown below:

Premium Cover
Premium Cover provides
- 100% cash back for your routine check ups, hygiene treatments and x-rays, up to £125 per policy year
- 50% cash back for remedial and restorative treatment such as fillings – benefit limits apply for certain treatments (max £1,000 per policy year. £500 limit applies for bridges and crowns)
Here are some situations when this plan may be suitable for you:
- You attend a private dentist or receive private dental treatment
- There is a chance your NHS dentist may only offer private dentistry in the future - this plan moves with you
Case study
You go to a private dentist for a routine check-up and discover that you need a filling and a scale and polish. With Premium Cover, you would be able to claim back 100% of the cost of the check-up, scale and polish (up to £125), and 50% of the cost of the filling, up to a maximum of £1000.
Core Cover
Core Cover provides
- 100% cash back for your routine check ups, hygiene treatments and x-rays, when treated as an NHS patient
- 100% cash back for remedial and restorative treatment such as fillings as an NHS patient
If you receive dental treatment on the NHS this may be suitable for you.
However, if your dentist provides treatment not ordinarily available on the NHS, e.g. white fillings, then Premium Cover may be more appropriate.
Similarly, if your existing dentist was to change from NHS to private, Premium Cover could be more suitable.
Case study
You receive dental treatment on the NHS. At a routine check-up you discover that you need a filling as well as a crown. With Core Cover, you would be covered for the check-up as well as the treatment and can claim 100% of the cost back.
For some benefits, you will not be eligible for cover until you have had your policy for one month (Core Cover) or three months (Premium Cover).
| Monthly Premiums | Adult | Family |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Cover | £19.95 | £49.80 |
| Core Cover | £9.95 | n/a * |
*Under 18s are covered for free on the NHS.

No-claims Discount
This policy includes a 25% no-claims discount when you join on claims made for remedial and restorative treatment. This means that if you don’t make a claim for this treatment your no claims discount will increase, although if you do make a claim your no claims discount will reduce on renewal.
Both Policies
Both policies cover:
- Mouth cancer cover up to £12,000 per year
- Worldwide dental accidents cover up to £10,000 per year
- Worldwide emergency dental cover up to £800 (choice of NHS or private dentist) per year
- Hospital cash benefit of £60 per night for up to 30 per year nights as an NHS patient, in relation to a dental accident
As with all insurance policies, there are some exclusions to the cover. Visit the General exclusions page. For some benefits, you will not be eligible for cover until you have had your policy for one month (Core Cover) or three months (Premium Cover).
