Why should I visit a hygienist?

Hygienists have an important role to play in dental health care. They assist the dentist by cleaning the patients' teeth and looking after the health of gums. They also help by educating patients on how to look after their teeth and how to apply preventative materials to the teeth and gums.

An increasing number of dental practices employ a hygienist on a part time or full time basis, and patients can now be seen by the hygienist when the dentist is unavailable if a course of treatment has been previously prescribed.

The hygienist supports the dentist in various ways.

  • The hygienist is trained to advise people on prevention of tooth decay and will work with your dentist to provide a tailored treatment to your needs.

  • The role of the hygienist has been expanded in recent times to include a couple of technical procedures:

    1. Dental x-rays may now be taken by hygienists. These are used by the dentist to make decisions on possible courses of treatment.
    2. If a dentist believes that it is necessary to apply a fissure sealant to a patient's teeth, he or she may refer that patient to a hygienist.

It is advisable to visit the hygienist as regularly as the dentist. Regular professional cleaning combined with good habits at home will result in a clean and healthy mouth, reducing the risk of tooth loss and improving appearance in the long run. Be sure to double check what is covered by your dental insurance provider.
