How to build community in your street
Happy neighbourhoods are places where you know your neighbours and where you feel it's a good place to live.
Building a community can bring many rewards, from a reduction in local crime to the increase in house prices in your area. Here are some tips on how to get to know your neighbours and make your street a better place to live.
- Start with the simple things and smile and say hello to the people walking down your street.
- Plant trees or a garden - beautify your street by planting trees or cleaning up an existing garden. You may be able to apply to the council for funding for trees or materials. Get people involved in planting, do your bit for the environment and improve your area at the same time.
- Club together - set up a club with your neighbours around mutual interests. Book clubs, gardening, or an informal game of football are all great ways of getting to know each other.
- Make a difference - is there something that you'd like change in your neighbourhood? An alley where people fly tip, or a neglected garden may bug you, and you may not be alone. Share your concerns with your neighbours and get together to change it.
