Exercise for your pet
Just like their owners, pets need exercise to keep them healthy. Exercise aids muscle development, weight control, and general health. Pets that are exercised regularly tend to be calmer and happier.
Dogs
You could benefit as much as your dog from a regular exercise regime. Do some research or consult your vet before starting any type of exercise plan so that you know exactly what kind and how much exercise that is ideal for your dog.
If you are starting a new exercise routine with your dog start slowly with regular brisk walks. A simple 10 - 15 minute walk every day is the perfect way to get your dog introduced to regular exercise.
Be aware of your dog's body language while on a walk or jog and watch for unusual signs of fatigue or troubled breathing. If your dog wants to stop, let it. You should always have your dog on a leash and it is better for their paws to run or walk on grass or gravel as opposed to concrete or roads so consider this when planning your route.
Cats
Cats are built differently to dogs when it comes to expending energy. They are designed for short, regular periods of intense activity as opposed to dogs that are more suited to longer and slower exercise sessions.
Toys are a great way to keep your cat fit and healthy. You should have a scratching pole for your cat to help exercise its back and shoulder muscles. There are many different toys available for cats and some of the most effective toys are inexpensive. By making a simple ball with wool, paper, maybe a ping pong ball and attaching it to the end of a string you could create a wonderful toy for your cat.
One thing to remember is that you should never lure your cat with your hand as this will teach it to bite and scratch people.
