Moving abroad with your dog
When you decide you want to move abroad there are specific things you will have to do to take your dog with you.
Immigrating with your pet can be very stressful for all parties involved. Preparing your dog for the move abroad is a lengthy process and you will need to allow time for this.
- Certify that your dog does not have rabies. This needs to be done at least six months before you leave.
- Make sure to acquire the correct import license for your dog.
- Find out from your vet about all the vaccinations your dog will need as soon as you find out you will be moving or as soon as possible!
The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (new window) is currently expanding its Pets Travel Scheme for the USA and Canada. This will stop the necessity of dogs going into 6 month quarantine provided they have had a rabies test and test negative.
