Getting a new pet

Owning a pet can be a rewarding experience, but you need to think about certain things before you go ahead.

Here's some helpful advice.

A pet provides affection, love and companionship and, once settled into the home, will quickly become one of the family. But don't underestimate how much responsibility and care owning a pet entails. Before deciding to buy a pet, consider the following.

  • Think about where you live - a large dog may not be ideal if you live in a flat.
  • If you have a garden which cats and dogs are to spend time in - make sure it's secure.
  • Look ahead - can you give an animal a good home for the rest of its life?
  • If you haven't owned a pet before, consider starting small! - a goldfish or hamster are perfect if you have little time or space.
  • Remember never give a pet as a present - the new owner may not have considered the work, expense and care involved.

Money matters

Once you've decided on the type of pet that is best for your lifestyle, think about finances. Did you know that it can cost £700 a year to keep an average-sized dog? Food, bedding and vet bills all mount up and pets all need regular vaccinations - the RSPCA also recommends that dogs and cats should be neutered.

Quality time

The other important factor is time. Animals, like humans, get lonely if left on their own for long periods of time. Remember dogs also depend on their owners for walks. Cats, however, also get lonely, so if you are out during the day, you may want to get two cats so they are company for each other.

The RSPCA, SSPCA and Ulster SPCA
