Alternative ways to travel

Travelling by air is fast and convenient, but there are other ways to travel that are just as satisfying - and that help to save the planet.

Travelling by bicycle, train and boat can offer longer and richer experiences than air travel.

These alternative ways of travelling also mean the voyage itself becomes part of the experience, unlike air travel which can be pretty nondescript.

You can interact with your environment, stop when you want to enjoy some scenery or have lunch in a particularly charming restaurant, dance on board the ship or hang your legs over the side of the boat.

Each mode of travel can require a bit of extra planning which will in turn make the journey a joy. And remember to get the right kind of travel insurance.

Before travelling by bicycle:

  • Ensure that you are fit enough for the ride
  • Research the routes thoroughly, buy maps that show cycling routes and get in touch with people who have done the same trip via clubs or websites
  • Allow enough

When travelling by train:

  • Buy a flexible ticket which allows for ad hoc changes or stops
  • Take plenty of board games, packs of cards and books
  • If you are travelling on a budget, pack food and drinks as these can be expensive if purchased on board

When travelling by boat:

  • Take advantage of the many activities on board - book early and explore all the options available including stopovers, diving or other water sports
  • Be prepared for all weather conditions, especially wind and rain, and hot conditions by taking a wide range of clothing and sunscreen
  • Cut down on expenses by purchasing all your holiday materials (such as camera equipment, sunscreen and writing materials) at home.

Travel by bicycle, train or water for your next holiday as a fun, relaxed and environmentally friendly alternative to air travel and make the journey as fun as arriving at the destination.
