One of the most rewarding types of holidays is a working holiday, where you work for extended periods, usually in a foreign country.

Working holidays have some big advantages over regular holidays. You can experience a different place, culture and environment, and you can earn money in an exotic location.

Working holidays also mean you can stay longer and move from being a tourist to being a local.

Some of the most common working holidays include:

  • Teaching English: Teach English to young children almost anywhere in the world. You will need a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate or a university degree in any subject. Pay is usually good and includes accommodation.
  • Waiting: One of the easiest cash jobs around, waiting is also a good way to get free food and meet other young travellers. Be warned, though: Every country has its own set of eating dos and don'ts! Expect to be run off your feet.
  • Tour guiding: Every holiday spot needs guides to introduce their sights to English-speaking tourists. Study the local history, monuments and personalities, and you could soon be the most knowledgeable tour guide around! If you have a specific skill like scuba diving or art history use your knowledge to become an instructor or guide.
  • Work in the tourist accommodation: Backpackers, hotels and other accommodation establishments always need English speakers to serve their clientele. Work at the front desk, in the kitchen or in the cleaning services. You'll meet loads of people and probably pick up some skills as well.

Getting started

Use the following websites to research the possibilities:

Agents can arrange work visas and placements, or you can go to the relevant embassy yourself. Make sure you have adequate travel insurance that covers you for the right length of time and the activities you are undertaking.

If possible, try to arrange with your employer to keep your current job open and to keep your present residence - it's always good to come home to something familiar.

Working in another country is a fabulous, once in a lifetime, experience which is a fun way to explore other cultures.
