Before completing your application please make sure you have read and printed or saved the Policy Summary and also the Policy Document. These outline the terms and conditions of your insurance cover.

Features of a Tesco Instant Annual Travel Insurance Policy

The policy you have purchased is underwritten by UK Insurance Limited and will run for the period of insurance shown on your confirmation e-mail.

The maximum duration for any one journey is 42 days, please note however if you have chosen a policy with Winter Sports cover the policy automatically includes a total of only 22 days or Winter Sports cover for the year.

You must be aged 64 or under to be covered by this policy.

General conditions and exclusions

The following conditions and exclusions apply to all sections of the policy wording

Conditions

The payment of claims under this policy is conditional on each insured person:

  1. Being a resident of the UK.

We reserve the right to:

  1. Decline any claim which is directly or indirectly related to an existing medical condition suffered by you or a travelling companion which was not disclosed to and accepted in writing by us at the date of issue of the policy.
Exclusions

We will not pay deterioration of or loss of or damage to property, or any legal liability, injury, illness, death or exposure caused by, contributed to by or arising from:

  1. your suicide or wilfully self-inflicted injury or illness, sexually transmitted disease, alcohol related incidents or the use of drugs, solvent abuse, the effects of alcohol or self-exposure to needless peril.
  2. you travelling in an aircraft (other than as a fare paying passenger in a fully licensed passenger carrying aircraft and for no other purpose).
  3. Claims and losses that are not directly associated with the incident that caused the claim. For example, loss of earnings due to being unable to work following injury or illness happening whilst on a trip or the cost of replacing locks in the event that keys are lost.

  • Hospital benefit £20 per day with a max limit of £200 per insured person.
Conditions

The payment of claims under this section of the policy is conditional upon you:

  1. not travelling contrary to medical advice or specifically to obtain medical treatment.
  2. not having received a terminal prognosis from a registered medical practitioner prior to the journey being booked or the issue of this policy, whichever came last.
Exclusions

We will not pay for any claim arising directly or indirectly from:

  1. An anticipated event.
  2. any surgery or medical treatment, which in the opinion of our medical advisors is not essential or could wait until your return to the UK
  3. Any treatment or help where, given your physical or mental condition, you should not have travelled or it would have been reasonable for you to have consulted your medical practitioner, prior to the trip, about whether or not it was appropriate for you to travel.
  4. The transport operator or their agents refusing to transport you or an insured person or a travelling companion, because they consider that you are not fit to travel.
  5. For the cost of any phone calls, other than necessary calls to our Assistance Service.

2 - Personal possessions

  1. you must comply with the carrier’s condition of carriage.
  2. you must provide receipts for lost or stolen items in order to substantiate your claim.

We will not pay for loss, theft, breakage or damage to:

  1. valuables carried in suitcases or other luggage unless they are at all times attended by you.
  2. sports equipment whilst in use.
  3. household goods or anything being shipped as freight.

  1. If we ask, you must provide confirmation from the issuer of the amount of the foreign currency supplied. In the case of sterling, documentary evidence of possession must be produced.

We will not pay for:

  • loss or theft of personal money unless it is with you or following forcible and violent entry when left in your locked personal accommodation and secured in a safety deposit box.
  • loss due to depreciation in value or shortage by error or omission.

5 - Cancellation of a journey

You must not be:

  1. Awaiting medical treatment as a hospital inpatient before booking any journey unless we know about it and have agreed in writing.
  2. Aware of any reason why the trip may be cancelled when you book it.

We will not pay for any claims caused by:

  1. You not having the correct passport or visa.
  2. You not wanting to travel or not enjoying the holiday.
  3. Default of any transport or accommodation provider or their agent or any person acting as your agent or your conference organiser.
  4. An anticipated event.

6 - Curtailment of a journey

Conditions
  1. You must not be travelling against medical advice or specifically to get medical treatment.
  2. You must not have been diagnosed with a terminal illness before travelling.
Exclusions

We will not pay for any claims caused by:

  1. Any additional or unused travel or accommodation expenses incurred without the consent of the Assistance Service.
  2. Any incident where you do not have a medical certificate from the doctor treating you abroad which says that you need to return home early.
  3. Additional costs incurred which are recoverable from the tour operator, airline or hotel, or other provider of the service.
  4. An anticipated event.
7 - Personal liability

Exclusions

We will not pay any claims caused by:

  1. the employment, business or profession of you or a member of your family.
  2. you owning, handling or looking after any animal.
  3. any accidents involving horse drawn, mechanically propelled vehicles, trailers, aircraft, motorised waterborne craft or firearms.
  4. an agreement unless that liability would have existed otherwise.

10 - Legal assistance

Conditions
  1. If we accept your claim, we or a solicitor we appoint will try to negotiate a settlement without having to go to court.
  2. We can refuse to pay any more legal costs if it is no longer more likely than not that you will be successful with your claim.
Exclusion

We will not pay for:

  1. Any claim you report to us more than 180 days after the date you knew about, or should have known about, the incident leading to the claim.
  2. Any claim resulting from any illness or injury that develops gradually or is not caused by a specific or sudden accident.
  3. Legal costs and expenses that you have paid or we will have to pay before we have agreed to them.

11 - Winter sports (Only applicable if you have chosen this cover)

Cover for winter sports trips is limited to 22 days per year.

  • Winter Sports equipment up to £500.
  • Emergency replacement of your personal possessions up to £300.
  • Loss of Pass and Fees up to £250 per person.
  • Piste Closure up to £200 per person.
  • Delayed Resort Departure up to £200 per policy.

Exclusions

We will not pay:

  1. Any claim made outside the recognised skiing season in the ski resort where the loss takes place.
  2. Any claim unless you booked your holiday before you left the UK.

Your right to cancel

If this cover does not meet your requirements, please return all your documents within 14 days of receipt. We will return any premium paid in full provided no claims have been made on the policy during that time. Should you choose to cancel, please return your documentation to: Customer Services Department, Tesco Travel Insurance, The Wharf, Neville Street, Leeds LS1 4AZ.

How to make a claim

To notify us of a claim in the first instance please telephone 0845 300 99 00.

How to complain

Should there ever be an occasion where you need to complain, please call us on our priority number 0845 300 99 00. If your complaint relates to a claim, contact your claims handler whose details will be shown in your claims documentation.

If you wish to write, then address your letter as follows:

  • Claims related complaints to Customer Relations Department, Tesco Travel Insurance, 17 Quay Street, Manchester, M3 3HN.
  • All other complaints should be addressed to Tesco Travel Insurance, The Wharf, Neville Street, Leeds LS1 4AZ.

If we cannot resolve the differences between us, you may refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). Their address is: South Quay Plaza, 183 Marsh Wall, London E14 9SR, telephone 0845 080 1800.

Under the Financial Services Markets Act 2000, should the company be unable to meet all its liabilities to policyholders, compensation may be available. Insurance advising and arranging is covered for 100% of the first £2,000 and 90% of the remainder of the claim, without any upper limit. For compulsory classes of insurance advising and arranging is covered for 100% of the claim, without any upper limit.
